"AGH!" Carlotta grimaces as the plaster comes off. It's not a pleasant sight, nor smell.

"It's just dead skin." the nurse says briskly, giving the leg a bit of a wash. Carlotta stares at it, noting how much paler it is than her perpetually tanned left leg, and that it's got thinner. Not to mention the long, surgical scar where the doctors put her bones back together.

"Couple of stockings, and nobody will notice." the nurse continues.

"The scar isn't important." Carlotta says, not entirely convinced about this herself. "So long as I can walk on it."

"Well it's been twelve weeks." the nurse says, little knowing that she had a fair bit of help from Guppy and that the injury is only really eight weeks old. "Have you been putting any weight on it?"

"As best I can." Carlotta says, wiggling her foot experimentally.

The nurse gives her the crutches back and she stands, cautiously, subconsciously noting how her centre of gravity has changed again.

"I can walk on it." she declares. "Do I have to have the crutches?"

"Take them with you for now." the nurse says. "Don't overdo it."

"Wouldn't dream of it." Carlotta says, thanking the nurse and leaving the hospital.

She uses the crutches for all of five minutes, to get from Will's father's car to a shop that sells canes.

"I need a black cane with a preferably silver or white handle please."

The man raises an eyebrow.

"May I suggest one of our more delicate designs?"

"No thank you." Carlotta says. "I wish it to match my hat."
