Breakin' teeth down in, tent one
I fought the law and the, law won
I fought the law and the, law won
I needed some satis-faction
I fought the law and the, law won
I fought the law and the, law won
Around the baby it felt so bad,
I'd had enough of Fern,
She gave me a real ton of crap
I fought the law and the, law won
I fought the law and the, law won.
She's robbed people of their, rations
She fought the law and the, law won
She fought the law and the, law won
She missed her baby and she, missed fun
She fought the law and the, law won
She fought the law and the, law won
Around the baby it felt so bad,
I'd had enough of Fern,
She gave me a real ton of crap
I fought the law and the, law won

In adjacent cells, with a typical barred door, Kate and Fern have been incarcerated. Fern has spent most of her incarceration so far sobbing loudly, but it hasn't got her any more than the bread and water Kate got.
There is one guard, who looks tired, and is sitting down the end of the corridor with a newspaper. There is a barred window in each cell, a non-lit fireplace near the guard, and a large barred window at the other end of the corridor.

Re: Breakout
The monkey climbs up on her shoulder.
Re: Breakout
Tommy comes up alongside Kate and their hands brush against one another.
"I take back everything I said about the monkey, by the way."
Re: Breakout
The remark is directed at the monkey, who looks only slightly less judgmental than he did earlier.
She assumes the sigh he heaves is his way of accepting her apology.
Without even thinking about it, her fingers thread with Tommy's when she feels the brush of his knuckles. It's momentary, but intimate for how absent it is.
Re: Breakout
Re: Breakout
Squeezing Kate's hand becomes an immediate reflex, even before he glances at her in the dimness.
Re: Breakout
There's a hard set to her jaw, even as she catches Tommy looking at her from the corner of her eye. She glances up at him —
— and softens, a smile playing at her lips as her fingers run along the side of his palm.
Re: Breakout
Re: Breakout
Re: Breakout
As it is, she protectively crosses her arm over his middle, reaching out for Carlotta with her free hand.
Re: Breakout
"Ow!" the shadowy figure says.
"Will!" Carlotta hisses, letting him go. "You're supposed to be watching Molly!"
"'Toria's got her." Will says. "I came t'find you."
"How much did you drink?" Carlotta asks.
"Bit of wedding beer, stop fussing."
Re: Breakout
Re: Breakout
"Has there been any more trouble here?"
Re: Breakout
He attempts to scoop Carlotta up at this point, but succeeds only in overbalancing and falling into a holly bush.
Carlotta rolls her eyes and picks him up instead.
"You already did that earlier." She says, carrying him towards the camp.
"We can't have more sex?" Will asks, pouting.
"Shh! We have guests!"
Re: Breakout
Raising his eyebrows in amusement at Carlotta and Will's exchange, though he's especially amused when she picks him up, he takes Kate's arm and hooks it through his own before they follow them.
"Hey, it's your wedding night, don't let us stop ya," he says with a low chuckle.
Re: Breakout
And equally surprised when Tommy repositions her arm, hooking it with his.
"Oh, gracious, no. Don't let us stop you. It's a happy occasion."
Her face grows a little warm.
"However, perhaps Tommy an' I should find our way out first."
Re: Breakout
"Will, I'm going to drop you if you're not careful." Carlotta says, depositing him outside her caravan.
"Go warm up the bed, I'll be back in a minute."
She beckons Kate and Tommy to come to the store caravan, where she'd held the bar portal open with a rock.
Re: Breakout
Before they go on, he pauses to have a word with Will before the young man goes inside. "Hey, it was good to meet'cha. Hope everything works out for you -- the both of you. Also," he adds, lowering his voice a little, "try not to depend on-- y'know, the stuff too much, know what I mean? I've done it. And it ain't worth it. There's better ways to cope." He gives a small but knowing motion with his head toward Carlotta, and after clapping Will on the shoulder, he rejoins the women.
Re: Breakout
(Whether he will remember this in the morning remains to be seen, but hopefully some of it will sink in.)
Carlotta gives Kate a hug before she goes back through.
"We'll work things out, I'll see you soon. Tommy, thanks for your help too."
Re: Breakout
"I've full faith that y'will. Jus' call on me if there's anythin' I can do t'help. I promise I'll stay outta jail next time."
Her lips twist.
"Thank you for everythin'. I had a real good time."
She means it, too. She got to dress up, see a dear friend wed, go dancing, and get in a fight. Granted, Fern wasn't a very engaging opponent, but she'll take what she can get. She's leaving pretty happy about things.
"Oh! My hat."
Re: Breakout
Stepping back as Kate says her goodbyes, they're about to open the door when she stops.
"Oh, right, I left it with Will, so it must be in Carlotta's caravan." His expression falls a bit. "...And hopefully not the caravan with the dog in it."
A beat, as he eyes Kate.
"I'm sure it's in Carlotta's caravan."
Re: Breakout
It's a parrot. And it appears to be wearing Kate's hat.
She grins, climbs up, and yoinks the hat.
"Squark! Stop starin' at my breasts!" The parrot declares, the last part in something of an American accent.
Re: Breakout
What is her life?
Now a fine shade of strawberry, Kate gingerly takes the hat from Carlotta, clears her throat, and glances at Tommy from the corner of her eye.
"Y'know, I've never been to a circus before tonight."
She pauses.
And turns to the door.
No need to prolong the devastatingly awkward.
Re: Breakout
He turns to Carlotta one last time.
"Maybe-- maybe there's a way to, uh, like, unteach the parrot to say that? Or something? Uh. Okay. We're just gonna-- go. It was a really, really nice ceremony, and we had a great time, and-- well, apart from the whole-- yeah. Okay. Going now. We'll see ya!"
And he follows Kate through the door.
Re: Breakout
She feels kind of bad now, doesn't look like Kate had that good a time overall. Better get her some front seat tickets for the show next time.
