Carlotta looks at pictures dolefully. The woman in the dress shop is measuring her vigorously.
"Stand properly." she barks, and Carlotta tries to do so. "And stop making that face, you ungrateful child!"
"Yes, don't let me down Carlotta." her grandmother says sternly. "You have far too few evening dresses and you'll need one every night at Ringmere."
"I'm only going to be there a term." Carlotta points out. "I'm sure it won't matter if I stick to the same few."
She immediately gets shouted down, and quietens as the glamorous garnments are pinned around her.
"Please, that's too tight."
"Then stand properly."
"I don't know how else to stand!"
"Then it's time you learned."
Carlotta sighs, with an ominous feeling about all of this.
"Stand properly." she barks, and Carlotta tries to do so. "And stop making that face, you ungrateful child!"
