"It's okay." Bobby says on the phone. "The school I'm being put in for the term is only a few miles away from Ringmere; if it gets too bad, we'll find a way to sneak out and meet up."
"Thanks Bobby." Carlotta says, relieved. "I'm going to do the best I can." Beat. "Unless they try to make me stay permanently, in which case I'll have to start swearing."
"Carlotta, we're leaving, get off the phone!" her father shouts from downstairs. Carlotta hurriedly says goodbye and picks up her night case, looking at herself in the mirror.
Ugh, I look like a doll.
The long and rather early drive takes place with Carlotta mostly in silence, bombarded with dos and don'ts by her father and grandmother. And then, she's dropped off, bag and case at her feet. Alone on the driveway, she shrugs, picks up the trunk in her strong arms and balances it on one shoulder. They're used to carrying her whole bodyweight, so although it's rather heavy it's nothing she can't handle.
She stops as a maid hurries out of the school, looking at her as if she was an alien with three heads.
"Goodness! You'll break your back! Put it down and let a porter take it!"
Carlotta puts it down, brushing the line of muck off her dress that the trunk left.
"Hallo, I'm Carlotta Brown, I'm new. Where is everyone?"
"You're three days early miss." the maid replies. "There's only the girls whose parents are away here at the moment. I'll show you to your room."
