Carlotta was somewhat relieved when her father and grandmother declined coming to the half term parents' day. She doesn't like the hint that they were embarrassed of her, but the fact that this won't draw attention to the gymnastics competition is probably a good thing.

She's pretty sure they'll be proud if she brings home a surprise trophy after all.

She spends the day mostly wandering around, observing the difference between parent-daughter relationships from that at St Clare's. A lot more fine clothing, a lot less hugging. Rather sad, she thinks, watching Victoria's mother rejecting a hug from her daughter.

She deliberately avoids Angela and her mother, feeling that she would need to walk on her hands or swear just to see their expression, and doesn't even get a good look at the woman. But after a while she comes across one of the fathers just sitting on his own on a bench, looking rather forlorn if anything. Oh well, might as well make herself useful.

"Hallo." she says, going over to him. "Do you want a cup of tea or anything?"

The man looks surprised.

"Actually, yes please." he says. Carlotta goes to get him one, and he smiles and thanks her.

"I don't think we've met." he says. "Are you a new girl?"

"I'm Carlotta Brown, I'm only here this term while St Clare's is being rebuilt." Carlotta says, sitting down next to him. He looks like he feels a bit out of place and could use the company.

He seems very interested in St Clare's, and they talk continuously for half an hour.

"I have to say, you don't seem at all like the other girls here." he says after a while. "I do hope this place doesn't spoil you. I've been worried for some time about my daughter, though please don't tell her I said that."

"Of course I won't sir." Carlotta says. "You haven't actually said who..."

She doesn't have time to finish the sentence; looking up, she sees Angela bearing down on them.

"Daddy! Come and meet the duke!" she says, seeming to want to get him away from Carlotta as quickly as possible. She shoots Carlotta a very ugly look, especially when her father tells her to stop dragging him and shakes Carlotta's hand.

"Good to talk to you Miss Brown, I hope your school is back in fine form soon."

Carlotta watches them go, purplexed, but doesn't let them occupy her mind for any more of the holiday.
