Half term was, in general, quite a success. Carlotta's father and grandmother actually came to see her this term. All went well except for one parent, the Honourable Angela's mother, who complained through the whole day.

It was highly satisfying when naughty new girl Claudine deliberately fell off the balcony into the swimming pool, soaking the dreadful woman.

"Are you sure you want to be seen as as beautiful as your mother Angela?" Bobby asks cheekily as they go into the common room at the end of the day. She had teased Angela mercilessly earlier in the day for showing off about her mother's beauty.

"Yes, she looked lovely in Miss Theobald's spare clothes." Carlotta says, very much tongue in cheek. Angela has used quite a lot of spite on her over the course of the half term. Unable to bear being teased by her arch-enemy, Angela swings around and faces Carlotta in a rage.

"Well at least I have a mother and a father who looks like me." she says spitefully.

It was a mean comment, and one said far more to hurt Carlotta than from any real observation that she didn't look like her father. But it struck a nerve, nonetheless, and the twins made a quick grab for Carlotta before she could do something rash. Susan, the head girl of the form, steps in quickly.

"Enough!" She says, in a calm but authoritative tone. "Bobby, Carlotta, we do not choose our parents and Angela's mother's behaviour was not Angela's fault. Angela, that comment you just made to Carlotta was not acceptable under any circumstances; you will apologise at once or spend a week in Coventry, with nobody speaking to you or interacting with you."

Susan knows there is no point in asking Carlotta to apologise to Angela for her part when she's in a temper; far more effective to wait until she's calmed down before making her and Bobby do it.

"Fine." Angela says haughtily, agreeing only because she liked lording over the other girls. "I apologise."

She storms off before Carlotta can get her fists out. Pat relaxes her grip on the fiery circus girl.

"Don't listen to her. You have your father's eyes, if nothing else."

That night, Carlotta lies awake, and looks at a picture of herself with her father under the blankets with a torch. She agrees with Pat; she's not too worried about her paternity.

But there's suddenly a nagging seed implanted in her mind. The story of her parents that she was always told suddenly sounds abridged. And she finds a sudden desire to know exactly what happened.
