Feb. 28th, 2011 11:03 pmShe'd been both looking forward to and dreading this moment. She watched as she swept out the stables. She let her tea go cold staring out the window.
And then she saw Will striding up the driveway, a big grin on his face, and ran to him to hug him tight.
"I can't believe you got leave!" she says, holding him close.
"Well it's only because I'm based in this country I've managed it." Will says, kissing her forehead gently. "I wave every time I fly over though."
Carlotta giggles. This isn't going to be so bad. This is Will. He'll understand.
They talk nine to the dozen about anything and everything; once Will has had time to catch up with his family they take refuge in their caravan for the few precious hours.
"So you've lost the evacuees already? What are you like?" Will asks, laughing. "Did you make them shift too much manure?"
Carlotta gently punches him on the arm. "No, they were dreadful town-mice. The little one was learning though. Their mum's sent them off to America now so at least they'll be safe there."
"Room for a couple of more little mouths then." Will says. "Now Libby's having one. If we get started we can have one a similar age, then they'll always have a playmate."
"Will... did you actually read my letters?" Carlotta asks. "I thought I was pregnant and I was terrified."
"Isn't everyone the first time?" Will asks. "You'd get through it. You're the strongest woman I know."
"I'm not sure I can. Can't we adopt?"
Will laughs, then frowns, when she realises she's serious.
"Are you saying you won't have a baby with me?" he asks, looking suddenly hurt. "You never said as such before we married."
"I know, but..."
"I mean, it's something you should have mentioned, Carlotta. Even though I like that you're boistrous and fiery I always assumed you were, you know..."
"What?"
"A proper woman." Will says.
Carlotta goes red and feels stung, then angry.
"What do you mean a proper woman?" she asks indignantly.
"Well, I'm off fighting the war, risking life and limb every night to protect England, including you. And you can't even be brave enough to push a baby out, something everyone else in the world is able to do!" Will yells.
Carlotta slaps him, hard.
"You're the one person in the world I expected to stand by me, to understand!" she yells. "I am not a machine for making babies! I am a woman who has a strong family history of relatives dying in childbirth. I'm not saying I'll never bear you a child, I'm saying that I'm not ready."
Will goes from angry to hurt.
"This could be the last time I make it home." he says. "I feel cheated, Carlotta. I have to go back in an hour. I've waited for so long to be back to you..."
"I'm not saying we'll never have sex." Carlotta says. "If you wear one of those little rubber condom things. I still love you Will."
"I love you too. I'm just disappointed." Will says, picking his bag up. "I'm going back to see Mum before I go."
When they kiss goodbye, the feeling of their first ever row still stings in both their hearts.
