The army hairdresser cut her hair into a shorter style, then taught her how to use a straightening iron. She was provided with a supply of make-up. A padded bra made her proportions just a little different. Then they took a photograph, and produced a new passport, new identification.
Name: Sara Fernandez.
Date of Birth: April 16th 1926.
They handed her a few pieces of kit. A handbag with a secret compartment for a gun. A radio transmitter. A Bible, in Spanish.
"What should I tell people?" Carlotta asks. "I am allowed to write to my family, right?"
"Yes, we don't want you to be regarded as missing." the officer says. "So that your identity is concealed even if your letters are discovered, we will forward the letters to your contacts. Sign them as Sara with a good gap between the end of your letter and your name; we will tear off the bottom and put your name in the gap. You will send them to a contact in Spain, who will send them to England.
You will tell your family that you have been placed in the Women's Balloon Corps. You will at no point mention that you are in the Special Operations Executive or reveal that you are in Spain."
Carlotta nods.
"Good. Your mission, Agent Frances, is to infiltrate German sympathetic groups in Spain. They will most likely be involved in attacks on Gibraltar, but you may be able to gain information that saves the life of our troops in other countries. You have permission to use whatever means you feel necessary, but be careful not to blow your cover or lose your source. You may be able to get more useful information over a long period of time than in one night of passion.
We will be dropping you off at Gibralta airport. With your skills, I'm sure you'll find a way to get across the border undetected. You will report in to a safe house for your next instructions.
If you get into trouble, unlike most of the army, you have permission to flee. Frankly, you are more use to us alive in a different area that brave and dead. If you are injured, stick to your fake identity, and if at all possible get to the hospital in Gibralta rather than Spain."
Carlotta nods.
"How will I find the safe houses?"
"If in doubt, consult the good book." the office taps the Bible. "Whatever you do, Agent Frances, keep hold of that Bible. It has all the answers you'll need."
Carlotta nods, wondering whether God objects to the military rewriting the Bible with a few subtle extra sentences. Though given the fact that half the world is engaged in killing the other half, it's probably quite low down his list right now.
