'Dear Will,
'Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife.'
I hope you're keeping safe out there. Dolly's husband got killed in action, and she's utterly devastated. I know the war is starting to turn in our favour, but please be careful.

'Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife.'
Molly is getting bigger by the day. She sits up really well now. I enclose a photo of her playing in the daisies. She started calling me Matta and I have no idea why, but it's sweet.
And as Billy started to go, she said 'Keep your pretty head low'
Fern's son, little William, is still travelling with us. I've heard nothing at all, and I have to admit, I'm getting very concerned. I mean, it's not like he's any trouble in the creche with the other babies, but it seems awfully queer that she hasn't got in touch with your mother to come back for him. He's started calling me Matta too. It doesn't feel quite right.
'Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me.'
In other, rather unexpected news, Major Rudders has approached me about doing some 'freelance' military work. Much less dangerous, minimal likelihood of being shot at all, they're promoting me to Captain, and I get to work from the circus as an acrobatics instructor!
I miss you terribly and hope, as always, to see you safely back soon.
All my love,
Carlotta.

'My dear Carlotta,

The soldier-blues were trapped on a hillside
What a lovely photo of Molly and the chimp! She's getting so big, I wish I wasn't missing her being tiny.
The battle raging all around
Congratulations on the freelance military work! I'd better get promoted from Flying Officer now you outrank me. You're quite sure you won't be shot? I don't want you going through that again.
The sergeant cried "We've got to hang on, boys"
Fern wrote to me a little while back, saying the stress of my 'affair' with her was the reason she is unwell and has had to go to the coast. However, the police have been around to my parents' house looking for her, so it may be that she is on the run from the law!
"We got to hold this piece a'ground"
The sun is baking here, and I'm getting rather tanned. We're making good progress, though I can't tell you details of course, I rather hope that we will be coming home soon.
"I need a volunteer to ride up"
Here are some photographs of me and the boys. Show them to Molly, I want her to know who her Daddy is. Do you think perhaps she and little William are trying to call you 'Ringmaster' as everyone else does?
"And bring us back some extra men"
I miss you both dreadfully. But I know we're doing the right thing out here. We can't let Hitler win. You should see some of the areas we've liberated, they're simply dreadful.
And Billy's hand was up in a moment
Loving you forever, and hoping to make you both proud.
Forgettin' all the words she said
Will

Dear Will,

'Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife.'
I am and always will be proud of you.
'Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife.'
I'd rather you came back alive than promoted. So don't you go showing off out there!
And as Billy started to go, she said 'Keep your pretty head low'
You owe me a proper wedding when you get back, remember, with both our families there.
'Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me.'
All my love,
Carlotta
