The reception takes place in the Big Top, which is more than large enough to accommodate the crowd. Outside, a large hog roast is taking place, with food and drinks aplenty.

It's a good time for Carlotta to catch up with her friends from school, most of whom she hasn't seen since the start of the war. A few of them have married in that time and brought husbands, some are in work or still at university. A petite, pretty woman, Alison, has brought a daughter of about two; finally a distraction from an incessant need to worry what her hair looks like. A tall, strapping woman, Mirabel, is sporting a burn scar on her face; rumour has it, she has been serving in combat.

The circus folk mingle among the guests, bringing food and occasionally breaking out into acrobatics. At the front of the tent, Fred the Bouncer sits with Wolf, his large guard dog.

"...Okay, whatever, he's still my boy and you can't keep him." Fern snaps. "I've been through a lot to get back here."

"Now isn't the time to decide that. Tonight is Carlotta's night, you're going to have to wait until tomorrow to solve this. He's a young child and will need to sleep soon."

"It's not fair on William to uproot him in the middle of the night. We aren't going anywhere." Carlotta says.

"As if, you'll just unpitch and go anywhere!" Fern says.

"Then let him stay at Will's parents tonight. They're not going to uproot their farm." Carlotta says.

"Why would they leave their party and their families to run away from you? You're not that important and they wouldn't leave William alone."

"Well another option is that we take William into temporary foster care." one of the police officers says, coming up.

"He can stay with my aunt and uncle." Fern says quickly.

"Are they here? Will's parents are already here and if they're willing that would probably be simplest. It's late and you don't want to disturb things even more as William is going to start getting grumpy and tired soon,"

Children aren't good at change to begin with and this has been a full day for him. If all of that happens to spill out on his mother, she won't see it as a problem.

"Will's parents are my aunt and uncle." Fern says.

"This officer will supervise you taking William into safe custody." The policeman says to Will's mother, who is waiting patiently for a word in edgeways.
