It's good to be back at school again, especially after having spent the whole holidays grounded. It feels like she's been away for months. And with the twins' mother giving her a lift, she doesn't have to make the trip back with her strict grandmother.
Exciting news awaits in abundance; even before she gets to the school, Carlotta spots that a nearby old house has been turned into a riding stables. On investigation, it turns out that two of the girls there will be day girls at the school for the next term. Carlotta takes an instant liking to Libby, who seems a nice horsey sort, though less to her cousin Fern, who is a more dainty girl.
When they finally get to school, another new girl awaits; Rachel, a famous actress in the making it seems. Getting the feeling that this newcomer is looking down her nose at them all, Carlotta wastes little thought or interest on her for the moment, too busy seeing her friends again and speculating who the head girl was going to be. Hilary reckoned it would be Janet; a sharp girl who was full of leadership potential, if a little prone to mischief.
Early next morning comes the excitement of Fern and Rachel squabbling over Alison, and the announcement that the third form will be putting on the end of term play, but this time writing and directing it fully themselves. Lost in thoughts for the moment, Carlotta misses the next few sentences until startled out of them by a round of applause.
She blinks around the classroom. Everyone is looking at her.
"Pardon?"
"Carlotta." Hilary explains patiently. "You're head of the form."
