Feb. 11th, 2009 09:08 pm"I don't get it." Carlotta says. "You have to sit in class all day, being polite and charming and elegant, but when you get the chance to do games more than half of you choose not to! Why?"
Greta shrugs, picking the lacrosse ball up in her stick and tossing it lightly into the air.
"Well, some of the girls just don't like getting hot and sweaty and messy." she says. "Not me though. And, well, I have to say, gamesy girls tend to get it in the neck from Angela."
"Pah! I'm not scared of Angela." Carlotta says, rather too loudly. Greta grimaces and nods to the pretty girl behind Carlotta.
"Oh trust me, Brown, you're not important enough to me to warrent me scaring you." she says sarcastically. "I see you've joined the sweaty girl group. Games, the one class that really does have no practical use."
"You just say that because you couldn't be any good at lacrosse if you tried!" Carlotta blurts out, having had enough of Angela's pointed tongue. "You're all beauty and no brains or build! I bet you couldn't even work out how to tie your lacrosse boots, let alone lead a five a side team."
"Stop it, the pair of you!" Greta says. "Angela, leave Carlotta alone. Carlotta, we all have our talents in different areas, and it's not Angela's fault if she isn't good at games just as it's not your fault you're not good at elocution..."
"Shut up Greta." Angela says rudely. "My girls could beat the five of you at five a side lacrosse any day of the week. Get warmed up Brown, you're on!"
Carlotta grins at the exasperated Greta as the girls go into the changing room.
"Don't antagonise her!" Greta says to her. "I'm sticking my neck out for you!"
"Thank you." Carlotta says. "But she doesn't exactly respect you as head girl, look how rude she just was to you! We're going to win back our self respect."
"Angela's been one of the top tennis players in the school for two years." Victoria pipes up. "She doesn't like lacrosse, but she's actually quite good at it when she does play. Lucinda was a team player at her previous school, but gave it up when she came here and joined Angela's court. And the rest of our team aren't all that good. If she wins, she's going to wipe the floor with us."
Carlotta looks around at the remaining two girls, and sighs.
"Come on girls! Are you going to let people like Angela walk over you all your lives? She's beautiful, yes, but it doesn't take a genius to see that she tramples on some of you almost as much as she does on me. Just for once, stand up for yourselves!"
They do a few more practice passes, then turn to face Angela's team. Angela chucks some bibs over in their direction; Carlotta's team in blue, hers in red.
"Wait! We need a referee!" Greta jogs over to the other side of the field to negotiate with the games' mistress. Astonished at such sudden enthusiasm in sport, she agrees at once.
"I want a good clean match!" she says, then blows the whistle.
Immediately, Lucinder of the red team has scooped up the ball and is running with it. Annie of the blue team, not good but fast, runs up to tackle her, and Lucinda fires it towards the rest of her team, who haven't yet caught up. Carlotta scoops it up and dashes towards the other end of the field.
Surprisingly, Angela's team start putting up a good fight, apart from the two girls who mostly bleat at the referee and don't do anything. By half time, it's one goal all, and Angela's team are beginning to tire.
"You're doing great!" Carlotta says to the blue team. "We can really win this!"
"Watch out." Greta says. "Angela doesn't take losing lightly. Make sure she doesn't accidentally on purpose knock you over the head with her stick. And watch out for Lucinda, she's not as tired as the others."
The second half is slower paced, but possibly more ferocious than the first. As the time gets closer to the end of the match, Angela makes a charge towards Victoria, who is running for the goal with the ball, and subtly trips her up. She smirks triumphantly as she pretends to help her up, then stares in dismay when she realises the ball has rolled into the goal.
"2-1 to the blues." The games mistress announces. "Two minutes to go."
Carlotta stands in the goal, lacrosse stick ready as Angela tears down the pitch with the ball. To the side of her, Lucinda is yelling at her to pass it, and being ignored. Dodging the remaining blue team members, Angela hurls it towards the girl's head.
Carlotta has time to grin as she jumps forward, catches the ball in mid air, then comes down in a forward roll back to standing, still holding the ball.
There is a moment of stunned staring, then the games mistress blows the whistle for time.
"Game to the blue team." she says. "Miss Brown, come with me."
Suddenly, Carlotta has the sinking feeling that she just blew it. She follows the mistress into the games room office.
"I know what you are, Miss Brown." she says, looking Carlotta in the eyes. "I can't believe you've been hiding it from us all this time!"
Carlotta holds her tongue, waiting to see what the conclusion is.
"Have you won many gymnastic competitions?"
Carlotta breathes.
"No, it's just a hobby."
"Now you may only be here a term my girl, but you can still do your bit for the school. How would you like to enter the county gymnastics tournament for Ringmere?"
Greta shrugs, picking the lacrosse ball up in her stick and tossing it lightly into the air.
