fiery_ringThe bargain had been struck, and was duly carried out. With Carlotta's help, Angela scraped a pass in Spanish and Maths; with Angela's help, Carlotta scraped a pass in etiquette.
Then, they ignored one another entirely, never to speak of it again.
The last few days of term passed uneventfully, and Carlotta bade farewell to the few friends she'd made in Ringmere, and then set her sights forward to Christmas.
The household is very quiet when she gets home. Her father is away, her grandmother seems unkeen to talk. But when she gets up to her bedroom, she finds a nicer surprise. At the foot of the bed is a small collection of parcels, wrapped in brown paper.
She crouches and unwraps each one; they'd said in the cards that they'd come to the group consensus that the birthday presents might not all fit in her trunk to get home. But she smiles nonetheless at the nice surprise of coming home to find that her friends at St Clare's had definitely not forgotton her.
